Augusta, Georgia Bridal Session // Avonlea

Augusta, Georgia Bridal Session // Avonlea

I am so glad Avonlea and I were able to work out a time for her bridal portraits! I've known this girl since she was 5 years old and the cutest little kid. Now she's so grown, beautiful, and lovely. She's fun, outgoing, hardworking and has the prettiest brown eyes.

Wedding photos aren't ready to be shared, but these beautiful bridal portraits can speak for themselves. Can't wait to share the Denney wedding in the upcoming months!

Dress was handmade for Avonlea by Diana Gay.
Hair: Keirsten Tarpley
Make-up: Emilee Carpenter

Lights, Camera, Break!

Lights, Camera, Break!

Lately I have been reading and researching off camera lighting. I used to hate the look of flash photography. Now I love it. But that doesn't mean I will always use flash photography.

I think it's true that photographers develop a certain  "look" to their images. They may use a certain editing style, similar camera & background settings, the same types of models ...all of those things add to the photographer's style. But even when said photographers obtain the look they are going for, there is ALWAYS room for improvement, room for trying new techniques, room to challenge yourself.

And that, I think, is what makes photography CREATIVE and wonderful. Room for growth and room for variety. It's never tiring. Well, physically tiring, yes. But the options for variety are never tired.

The hard part for full-time photographers is exhaustion. They get so tired of shooting the things they truly love to shoot, but they don't always get a break. They don't always have extra time to find new things to capture. It's all about TIME. To be creative you need time. Finding time can be difficult. We have families. We still have to do things like laundry and yard work. Or maybe we would just like to spend time with our kids or go kayaking, without a camera in hand.

It's been such a good year for me - I've learned to say no to certain sessions. I've contemplated types of sessions I love to do. I've thought about techniques I want to try. And I've started to form ideas for subjects I would like to photograph.

These off-camera lighting portraits are some of those things I've been wanting to attempt. So here's to taking breaks, learning new things and not missing the beautiful parts of life happening around you.

For you amazing photographer friends out there. Take a break! Shoot what you love. Don't take on too much at one time. Only accept sessions you ENJOY. Spend time with your family. Don't be scared to try something new.

A special thanks to Meagan for being so awesome.

Scott & Meagan Proposal

Scott & Meagan Proposal

It's been a little over a year and a half since I photographed my last proposal (you can view that proposal of some amazing people here). So when Scott asked me to capture their proposal, of course I jumped at the opportunity.

I arrived a little early to scope out the area. Then it was just a matter of waiting for them to appear. A dark afternoon led to thoughts of "Please don't rain!", but the sunlight couldn't have been more perfect.

After a reminiscent date night, including a walk on the greenway, Scott popped the question and with the biggest smile Meagan said, "Yes!"

So Scott & Meagan, congrats again! Enjoy every minute of your engagement. You guys are the coolest and I'm really glad you found each other!

4 Reasons to Choose a Bridal Session // Waynesboro, Virginia

4 Reasons to Choose a Bridal Session // Waynesboro, Virginia

I have come to realize that bridal sessions seem to be more of a southern tradition. I'm from the south and didn't have a bridal shoot for my wedding. But over the past few years, I have decided that bridal sessions are so much fun, for a few reasons:

1. You get to wear your dress for more than one day!
2. You get to dress up and practice how you want your hair and make-up to be for the big day.
3. You get to have FUN and be RELAXED without the stress of a busy wedding day - this gives you time to just enjoy being a bride BEFORE your wedding day!
4. You get some pretty pictures and you can decide if you want a bridal canvas to display at your reception. :)

I was able to travel with Emily to her hometown shoot these beautiful photos at Shenandoah National Park. If you know me, you know I love sunlight. Well, the sun was out all day and then decided to hide for our evening session ---- but we still managed to get some beautiful photos and enjoy our time outdoors. :) Love this sweet friend and the time we spent together during our trip!
